Program Description

Service dogs are trained to help our veterans who have been injured and require additional aid that service dogs can provide. These dogs have been trained to help in many ways to make the lives of our veterans much better. It is also their goal to enrich the lives of veterans from recent conflicts who have lost the use of their limbs or their hearing while in active combat, educate the public to accept the use of service dogs in public places, and assist with animal rescue when possible.

Services

  • The service dogs will be trained to meet each individual veteran’s specific needs which could include:
  • Balance work
  • Stand and brace
  • Helping to pull a manual wheelchair
  • Turning lights on and off
  • Opening household doors
  • Pushing buttons to open automatic doors in public
  • Retrieving dropped items
  • Retrieving a phone in an emergency or other command items
  • Retrieving items from shelves and counters
  • Paying a cashier
  • Carrying items in a backpack
  • Hearing ear/Signal work
  • Any other skill that can help the individual live a more independent life

Eligibility

  • Be active duty military or a veteran

  • Two letters of recommendation from individuals not related to the applicant.
