Program Description

Coast Guard Mutual Assistance (CGMA) is the official relief society of the U.S. Coast Guard. CGMA is a non-profit charitable organization established to provide financial aid to the entire Coast Guard family. Its mission is to promote the financial stability and general well being of Coast Guard people through interest-free loans, grants, and financial counseling.


  • Emergency Assistance: Interest-free loans for clients caught in emergency, short-term financial situations beyond their control that endanger personal well being. Authorized expenses might include food, shelter, utilities, or emergency travel.
  • General Assistance: Interest-free loans when unexpected events or expenses cause a serious financial burden and financial need is demonstrated. Authorized expenses might include: vehicle repair, childcare, adoption, or basic living expenses after loss of income.
  • Disaster Response: Emergency assistance for evacuation and basic living expenses during natural disasters. Assistance may be in the form of no-interest loans or financial grants.
  • Financial counseling referrals.


  • Active Duty Coast Guard Members, including Academy Cadets, Officer Candidate School personnel and Recruits.
  • Retired active duty Coast Guard members.
  • Reserve Coast Guard Members, serving on extended active duty.
  • Reserve members in drilling status or Standby Reserve members in active status.
  • Coast Guard Auxiliary Members, who are active, participating members of their flotilla.
  • Certain civilian Coast Guard employees.
  • PHS Officers and Chaplains.
  • CGMA Employees.
  • Immediate family members of the above.

How To Apply


  • Valid Coast Guard ID card.
  • Leave and Earning Statement.
  • Documents to support the need for assistance, such as copies of bills or statements, estimates for car repairs, rental agreement, eviction notice, utility bills, etc.
  • In most cases, a CGMA Budget Form (CGMA Form 15) must also be completed and submitted with the application.
