National Service Officers

Program Description

National Service Officers (NSOs) provide information, counseling, and claims service to veterans and their families. NSOs assist veterans and their dependents in filing claims for VA disability compensation and pension; vocational rehabilitation and employment; education; home loan guaranty; life insurance; death benefits; health care and much more.

National Service Officer programs are an important component of many Veterans Service Organizations. National Service Officers are trained by their organizations in veterans' benefits and accredited by the Department of Veterans Affairs. NSOs provide their services free of charge to veterans and their families.

In RI, NSOs are stationed at the Providence VA Regional Office, where they have access to VA benefits files and staff. Certain NSOs also do outreach at the Providence VA Medical Center and Naval Station Newport.

Eligibility

  • The veteran does not need to be a member of a Veterans Service Organization to receive assistance from its NSOs.
